The critically acclaimed Spanish film, 'Sundays' ('Los Domingos'), directed by Alauda Ruíz de Azúa, has achieved a major international milestone with its acquisition for U.S. distribution by Outsider Pictures. This strategic partnership, finalized with Paris-based Le Pacte, ensures a robust theatrical presence for the multi-award-winning movie across key American markets this autumn. The film's compelling narrative, which delves into complex family dynamics and personal vocation, has resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike, earning it significant accolades, including multiple Goya Awards.

Award-Winning Spanish Film 'Sundays' Set for U.S. Theatrical Debut This Fall

In a significant development for Spanish cinema, Outsider Pictures has successfully secured the U.S. distribution rights for Alauda Ruíz de Azúa's celebrated film, 'Sundays' ('Los Domingos'). The agreement, forged with international sales agent Le Pacte, mandates a minimum theatrical release in at least ten of the top fifty film markets across the United States, encompassing major cultural hubs such as New York and Los Angeles, slated for this coming autumn. This announcement follows the film's remarkable success at Spain's 40th Spanish Academy Goya Awards, where it garnered top honors for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Patricia López Arnaiz), Best Supporting Actress (Nagore Aranburu), and Best Original Screenplay. 'Sundays' has already achieved considerable box office success in Spain, grossing €4.9 million ($5.8 million) through distributor Bteam, positioning it as the third highest-grossing Spanish release of 2025. The film delves into the life of Ainara, a 17-year-old student from northern Spain, who contemplates a life as a cloistered nun, much to the concern and self-interested reactions of her family members, Iñaki and Maite. The film is lauded for its nuanced exploration of family dysfunction and the pursuit of individual calling, a theme that director Ruíz de Azúa has characterized as a study of intolerance. Paul Hudson of Outsider Pictures finalized the deal with Romain Rancurel, head of international sales at Le Pacte. Hudson expressed his admiration for the film, noting its lasting impact and authentic portrayal of characters, while Rancurel conveyed excitement for American audiences to experience the film's global success. Co-produced by Movistar Plus+, Buenapinta Media, Encanta Films, Sayaka Producciones, Colosé Producciones, Think Studio, and Los Desencuentros Película, 'Sundays' stands as a testament to its director's exceptional talent, following Ruíz de Azúa's previous triumph at Series Mania for 'Querer' last year.

This strategic move to bring 'Sundays' to a broader U.S. audience highlights the growing international appeal of Spanish-language cinema. The film's success underscores the power of compelling storytelling that transcends cultural barriers, offering a universal examination of family relationships and personal conviction. It serves as an inspiring example for independent filmmakers and distributors alike, demonstrating that artistic merit, coupled with a strategic distribution plan, can lead to significant global recognition and commercial success. The commitment to a wide theatrical release in the U.S. is a strong indication of confidence in the film's ability to engage diverse audiences, fostering a richer cinematic landscape.
