In a strategic move to bolster its Korean content library, Disney+ has announced the commencement of production for a K-drama adaptation of Keigo Higashino's globally celebrated novel, 'The Miracles of the Namiya General Store.' This series promises a unique blend of fantasy and emotional storytelling, bringing a beloved narrative to a new audience. The streaming giant's latest venture signals its commitment to expanding its presence in the competitive East Asian entertainment market, following a trend of significant investment in original Korean productions.

Disney+ Unveils Star-Studded Korean Adaptation of Best-Selling Novel

On April 29, 2026, Disney+ officially kicked off principal photography for its ambitious K-drama adaptation of 'The Miracles of the Namiya General Store,' a renowned novel by Japanese author Keigo Higashino that has captivated over 13 million readers worldwide. This marks a significant addition to Disney+'s burgeoning slate of East Asian originals, slated for a global release in 2027.

The series will feature veteran actor Ryu Seung-ryong in the pivotal role of Go Min-joong, the sagely proprietor of the mysterious general store. This role represents Ryu's third major collaboration with Disney+, following his critically acclaimed performance in the 2023 superhero thriller 'Moving,' which stands as the streamer's most successful Korean original to date, and the 1970s crime drama 'Low Life.'

Joining Ryu Seung-ryong are promising young talents Kang You-seok ('Resident Playbook'), Park Jung-woo ('20th Century Girl'), and Kim Seong-jeong ('The Woodcutter and the Fairy'), who will portray the trio of petty criminals central to the story. The ensemble cast is further enhanced by popular Korean drama figures such as Kim Hye-yoon ('Lovely Runner'), Moon Sang-min ('Pavane'), and Lee Chae-min ('Bon Appétit, Your Majesty'). Anticipated special appearances include acclaimed actors Yum Jung-ah, Yeom Hye-ran, Jung Chae-yeon, and Jang Dong-yoon.

The series is helmed by director and writer Park Young-ju, recognized for her work on the 2024 true-crime comedy 'Citizen of a Kind.' Production is managed by The Lamp, the Korean studio behind the acclaimed film 'A Taxi Driver.' This adaptation follows previous screen versions, including Ryuichi Hiroki's 2017 Japanese film and Han Jie's Chinese adaptation, which notably featured Jackie Chan.

This initiative is part of Disney+'s intensified efforts to narrow the content gap with competitors like Netflix, which has significantly invested in Korean productions over the past decade. Disney+'s extensive 2026 lineup, revealed at a November preview event in Hong Kong, includes high-profile titles such as 'Made in Korea,' 'Perfect Crown,' 'Gold Land,' 'Portraits of Delusion,' 'The Remarried Empress,' and a second season of 'A Shop for Killers.' The platform also announced a Korean remake of the FX series 'The Americans' and an expanded esports streaming partnership, underscoring its strategic focus on the Korean market.

This ambitious K-drama adaptation offers an exciting prospect for fans of intricate storytelling and fantasy. The novel's timeless themes of connection and guidance, combined with a talented cast and experienced production team, suggest that Disney+ is poised to deliver a compelling and emotionally resonant series. This project not only enriches Disney+'s content portfolio but also highlights the increasing global appeal and creative dynamism of Korean drama.
