Movistar Plus+, a leading Spanish pay television and streaming service, is set to undergo a significant leadership transition with the impending departure of its CEO, Daniel Domenjó. This change represents the second major management overhaul for the company in a little over a year, signaling a period of strategic recalibration. The move comes as Movistar Plus+ has achieved notable international acclaim for its original productions, showcasing a robust creative output that has garnered attention at prestigious global film festivals.

Domenjó's exit will usher in Alfonso Gómez Palacio, currently the head of Telefónica's Latin American operations, into the top leadership role. This change in command is expected to provoke discussions within the Spanish media industry, as Movistar Plus+ has been a crucial force in elevating Spanish content onto the international stage. The company's recent successes, including multiple selections at the Cannes Festival and other acclaimed awards, highlight its strong commitment to high-quality, artist-driven productions.

Leadership Transition at Movistar Plus+

Daniel Domenjó is slated to step down as the chief executive of Movistar Plus+, Spain's dominant pay-TV and SVOD service. This development constitutes the second leadership change within the organization in just over a year. Alfonso Gómez Palacio, currently responsible for Telefónica's operations in Latin America (excluding Brazil), is poised to assume the CEO position. The initial report of Domenjó's resignation emerged from the Spanish financial publication El Economista, though Movistar Plus+ has refrained from official comment on the matter. This executive transition arrives at a pivotal moment for the company, which has recently seen its original content receive significant international recognition and accolades, underscoring its growing influence in the global entertainment landscape.

The departure of Daniel Domenjó and the arrival of Alfonso Gómez Palacio signify a new phase for Movistar Plus+. Domenjó's tenure, which began in March 2025, involved a roadmap focused on expanding Movistar Plus+'s appeal to mainstream and younger demographics, as he outlined in a rare interview last September. The company reported a net gain of 278,000 subscribers in 2025, reaching a total of 3.8 million. Gómez Palacio, a seasoned Telefónica executive, is known for his financial acumen and ability to improve margins through asset management. The industry is now keenly observing whether this shift to a more corporate leadership style will impact Movistar Plus+'s robust investment in artistically ambitious film and television projects, which have been instrumental in propelling Spanish productions to international prominence.

Movistar Plus+'s Ascent in Global Content Production

Movistar Plus+ has solidified its position as a significant force in the global content market, particularly within Spain. The company's original productions have consistently garnered critical acclaim and international recognition, highlighting a strategic investment in creative talent and high production standards. This success has been crucial in driving Spain's recent surge in the international entertainment scene. The impressive slate of acclaimed titles demonstrates Movistar Plus+'s commitment to fostering innovative storytelling and artistic excellence, establishing a strong reputation for the platform on a worldwide scale and bringing Spanish narratives to a broader audience.

The creative achievements of Movistar Plus+ are underscored by several notable successes. Recently, two of its original works, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s 'The Beloved' starring Javier Bardem, and 'La Bola Negra' featuring Penélope Cruz, directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, were officially selected for main competition at the esteemed Cannes Festival. Furthermore, Pedro Almodóvar’s 'Bitter Christmas' received substantial early backing from Movistar Plus+. In 2025, Alauda Ruiz de Azúa earned top honors at Series Mania for 'Querer' and at San Sebastián for the film 'Sundays,' both Movistar Plus+ productions. The company also boasts two series, 'I Always Sometimes' and 'Many People Need to Die,' competing at Canneseries. The Oscar nomination for the Atmos Dolby-mixed sound of another title, 'Sirāt,' further exemplifies the company's commitment to high production quality, which was initially championed by a previous management team that included president Sergio Oslé, content head Domingo Corral, and CEO Cristina Burzaka.
