Christopher Briney's Surprising Musical Journey in 'Hacks' and His Spinoff Vision

John Lasseter

Former chief creative officer of Pixar, whose principles of storytelling have shaped modern animation.

Christopher Briney, known for his role in The Summer I Turned Pretty, has opened up about his unexpected musical turn as pop star Nico Hayes in the recent season of Hacks. Despite previously expressing discomfort with singing for his role in Mean Girls, Briney eagerly embraced the challenge for Hacks, captivated by the show's exceptional writing and critical acclaim. He described his audition process as a whirlwind, playfully admitting to exaggerating his vocal abilities to secure the part, a decision he has no regrets about given the opportunity to join such a celebrated series.

During filming in Las Vegas, Briney’s experience extended beyond the set, including some lighthearted gambling that resulted in minor losses. He recounted the amusing interaction with hotel staff while trying to practice his songs, eventually succumbing to their persistence and venturing out. Reflecting on Nico's character, Briney noted the deliberate influences from pop icons like Harry Styles and Charlie Puth, yet emphasized his desire to imbue Nico with a unique, old-school rock swagger, rather than replicating existing personas. He described Nico as a sensitive and sweet individual, driven by a clear sense of purpose and an unapologetic approach to pursuing his desires, which ultimately shapes his interactions with Deborah Vance.

Working alongside veteran actress Jean Smart proved to be a profound learning experience for Briney. He spoke candidly about his initial apprehension of joining an established and highly praised production, but quickly found Smart to be incredibly supportive and generous, making him feel at ease despite the on-screen romantic entanglement. Briney also shared his imaginative concept for a potential Nico Hayes spinoff, envisioning a storyline where the pop star loses his voice, forcing him to navigate a new path. This unique idea, though initially a jest, taps into real-world challenges faced by musicians, adding a layer of depth and intrigue to his character's future possibilities.

This interview highlights the actor's dedication to his craft, his willingness to step outside his comfort zone, and his ability to contribute meaningfully to a beloved series. His thoughtful approach to character development and his imaginative ideas for future narratives underscore a promising career in the entertainment industry.
