Disney Animation Luminary Tony Bancroft Shines at Animayo Gran Canaria with "The Piano" and Masterclasses

On April 23, 2026, it was announced that Tony Bancroft, an esteemed animator, director, and producer with a career spanning over three decades, will be a distinguished guest at the Animayo Gran Canaria festival. This marks Bancroft's inaugural participation in the Spanish festival, which is scheduled to take place from May 6-9. During his visit, Bancroft will not only discuss his illustrious career and creative processes but also present Avery Kroll's highly praised animated short, "The Piano," in his capacity as executive producer, at the festival's opening night.

A highlight of Bancroft's engagement will be an in-person workshop titled "Visual Storytelling: Think Like an Artist, Tell Like a Director," offering attendees invaluable insights into the craft of animation. Additionally, he will conduct a masterclass, "Animation with a Legacy: Mulan, The Lion King, Aladdin and Other Unforgettable Films," delving into the rich history and impact of his contributions to some of Disney's most iconic works. Bancroft, an alumnus of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and currently leading the animation programs at Lipscomb University, played a crucial role in the resurgence of Walt Disney Feature Animation in the 1990s. His work as co-director of "Mulan" and as animation supervisor for beloved characters such as Pumbaa from "The Lion King," Iago from "Aladdin," and Cogsworth from "Beauty and the Beast" has left an indelible mark on cinematic history.

Beyond his extensive tenure at Disney, Bancroft has also collaborated with major studios like Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures, contributing to films such as "Mary Poppins Returns" and "Space Jam: A New Legacy." He also executive produced the Oscar-nominated "Mosley" and is a co-founder of Toonacious Family Entertainment, a studio dedicated to family-friendly content, and the Animation Y'all! Expo. His enduring influence and commitment to the art of animation continue to inspire new generations of artists and storytellers.

Tony Bancroft's participation in Animayo Gran Canaria highlights the festival's commitment to showcasing animation excellence and fostering educational opportunities. His willingness to share his profound expertise, particularly in visual storytelling and character development, provides a unique and invaluable experience for aspiring and seasoned animators alike. This engagement underscores the timeless appeal and continuing evolution of animation as a storytelling medium, reinforcing the idea that foundational artistic principles remain crucial even amidst technological advancements. Bancroft's legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated artists can have on global culture and the imagination.
