Critique of Netflix's Animated Feature 'Swapped'

Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic whose reviews and essays defined cinema criticism for decades.

The animated feature 'Swapped' on Netflix presents a whimsical exploration of identity and unity through the age-old narrative device of body-swapping. Boasting an impressive voice cast including Michael B. Jordan and Juno Temple, this film, while traversing familiar territory, distinguishes itself with captivating visuals and a heartfelt message. Directed by Nathan Greno, the movie offers a delightful cinematic experience that transcends its seemingly conventional premise, aiming to enchant younger audiences and their families alike.

The film, originally known as 'Pookoo,' unfolds within the picturesque 'Valley,' a setting where various creatures, including the small, otter-like Pookoos and the grand, owl-parrot hybrid Javans, inhabit a world not always in perfect synchronicity. The central figure, Ollie, a curious young Pookoo voiced by Michael B. Jordan, is driven by an insatiable desire to explore beyond his familiar surroundings. His adventurous spirit often places him at odds with his cautious parents, masterfully voiced by Cedric the Entertainer and Justina Machado, who advocate for safety above all else with their motto: 'Hide today, alive tomorrow!' Ollie's grandmother, portrayed by Tata Vega, adds an element of folklore with her tales of the 'Fire Wolf,' a narrative thread that becomes crucial as the story progresses.

A pivotal moment occurs when Ollie encounters Ivy, a Javan voiced by Juno Temple, with whom he shares a past connection involving a simple act of kindness. Through an unexpected turn of events involving a 'glowing pod,' Ollie and Ivy find their consciousnesses exchanged. This unlikely predicament forces the two, despite their initial differences, to collaborate for survival. Their journey leads them to an endearing fish character named Boogle, voiced by Tracy Morgan, whose comedic timing and memorable performance are noted as a highlight of the film, making him a scene-stealer.

As the narrative unfolds, 'Swapped' gently weaves in themes of cooperation and understanding between different species, culminating in a sequence where Ollie and Ivy, temporarily transformed into fish, must work with Boogle to overcome a challenging obstacle. The movie delivers its profound messages without resorting to heavy-handedness, maintaining an engaging pace with abundant humor and surprising plot developments. The stunning computer animation vividly brings the verdant landscapes to life, evoking a desire for a broader theatrical release to fully appreciate its visual splendor. The character designs contribute significantly to the film's charm, making it a visually appealing creation. While the vocal performances by Jordan and Temple are commendable, Morgan's portrayal of Boogle stands out as a particularly compelling and entertaining aspect of the movie, suggesting his natural talent for voice acting in animated productions.
