Anne Hathaway Reflects on 'Devil Wears Prada' Meme Moment

Anne Hathaway recently reflected on a widely shared meme from 2022, where she was seen awkwardly deflecting a reporter's question about Anna Wintour at an event. The actress expressed her discomfort during the exchange, clarifying her intentions and acknowledging how the moment became a viral sensation. She also shed light on another coincidental fashion moment involving Wintour, emphasizing the unplanned nature of her outfit choice that resembled her iconic character, Andy Sachs.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hathaway revisited the red carpet incident from the 2022 Elle Women in Hollywood event. A journalist pressed her about her conversations with Anna Wintour regarding 'The Devil Wears Prada,' a film inspired by the fashion mogul. Hathaway admitted she felt “very uncomfortable” and “disloyal to Nina Garcia,” the head of Elle, given the event’s context. Her quick, laughing dismissal of the question, initially posted on Elle's TikTok, swiftly became a popular meme across social media platforms.

Hathaway further explained her reaction, stating, "the journalist doubled back on it," which made her feel "doubly uncomfortable." She perceived the question as potentially "opportunistic," designed to go viral due to its association with 'The Devil Wears Prada.' She acknowledged that her attempt to shut down the question might have been "a little bit too harshly" handled, prompting her to consider a more graceful approach to setting boundaries in future high-pressure situations.

The conversation also touched upon a separate, much-discussed occasion where Hathaway was photographed sitting beside Anna Wintour at a fashion show, wearing an outfit that uncannily resembled one of her character Andy Sachs' looks from 'The Devil Wears Prada.' Hathaway revealed this was a "total fluke," explaining that her initial outfit choice for the event didn't work. The alternative — a brown leather jacket, brown skirt, and turtleneck — coincidentally mirrored her character’s style. She recalled thinking, “I look like Andy Sachs right now, I wonder if anyone will notice?” and was surprised to find herself seated next to Wintour, humorously noting that perhaps this unplanned moment contributed to the ongoing buzz around a potential sequel.

Anne Hathaway's candid remarks offer a deeper understanding of the pressures faced by public figures in the digital age, where every interaction can become a viral moment. Her reflections highlight the delicate balance between maintaining professional composure and personal authenticity, especially when dealing with persistent questions about past roles and public perceptions.
