Celebrated Media Executive Gerry Byrne Honored by Fordham University

On April 29, 2026, it was announced that Gerry Byrne, the esteemed Vice Chairman of PMC, parent company of Variety, will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree by Fordham University. The prestigious ceremony is scheduled for May 16. Byrne, an alumnus of Fordham Preparatory School (1962) and Fordham College (1966), earned his U.S. Marine officer commission through a rigorous training program during his university years. His distinguished service in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969 earned him the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V, a testament to his bravery and dedication. Beyond his military accolades, Byrne has been recognized with the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and, notably, the Navy’s highest civilian award last year, celebrating his sustained support for veterans and extensive involvement with various non-profit organizations.

Fordham University lauded Byrne as an “entrepreneur, trailblazing media executive and advocate for military veterans,” underscoring the multifaceted impact of his career. His journey in media and publishing began significantly as the inaugural publisher of Crain’s New York Business, followed by a pivotal role as a senior executive at Norman Lear’s ACT III Communications. His tenure as the publisher of Variety was transformative, where he masterfully guided the publication's evolution into a diverse global brand. Byrne will share the spotlight with Maureen Corrigan, a distinguished book critic for NPR’s “Fresh Air” and a Fordham English graduate from 1977, who later pursued advanced degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. Corrigan currently holds the position of Nicky and Jamie Grant Distinguished Professor of the Practice in Literary Criticism at Georgetown University. Also honored at the commencement will be Hoda Kotb, the beloved co-anchor of NBC’s “Today” show, who will deliver the commencement address.

Gerry Byrne's honorary degree from Fordham University serves as a powerful reminder of how dedication, leadership, and a commitment to service can leave an indelible mark on multiple sectors. His journey from military service to transforming the media industry, all while championing veterans, exemplifies a life of purpose and profound influence. This recognition encourages us to reflect on the importance of giving back to our communities and leveraging our platforms to support causes greater than ourselves. It underscores that true success encompasses not only professional achievements but also significant societal contributions, inspiring individuals across all fields to strive for excellence and compassion.
