Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, a celebrated Tamil film icon affectionately known as “Thalapathy,” has made an unprecedented entry into Tamil Nadu’s political arena. His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured a remarkable 108 seats in the recent Assembly elections. This historic achievement has positioned TVK as the leading single party in the southern Indian state, overturning nearly six decades of political control shared between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Following this victory, Vijay has formally submitted his claim to the Governor, seeking to establish the new government.

With 108 seats, TVK surpassed both the DMK (59 seats) and the AIADMK (47 seats) in its inaugural election, capturing approximately 35% of the popular vote. Although TVK fell short of the 118 seats required for an absolute majority in the 234-member Assembly, creating a hung parliament, the current political dynamics suggest that an extensive coalition might not be necessary. Securing support from a few smaller parties could be sufficient for TVK to reach the majority threshold. This electoral success follows a record-breaking 85.1% voter turnout across all 234 constituencies.
